Instructor:  Mazie Hough

Time:  Tuesday; 3:30 – 5:30 pm

Description:  The course will focus on the methods and skills necessary for researching and writing social history by examining 19th and early 20th century Maine.   Using Fogler Library’s collection of documents, the class will discuss the uses and limitations of such sources as city directories and maps, tax inventories, the federal census, newspapers, institutional and organizational records, letters, diaries, songs, and sermons.  Secondary readings will illustrate how other historians have used some of these sources to help them understand 19th and early 20th century America.
