Description: The Greeks were unique in the ancient world. By the 6-5th centuries BCE they developed rational philisophical thought, democracy, tragedy and other art forms; they had a seminal influence on subsequent civilizations, especially the West. The Greeks also engaged in expansion and conflict, to such an extent that they all but destroyed their civilization. their response was not adequate to the challenges they encountered; thus in the long run, they were replaced by more resilient civilizations. In this course we will student who they were, what they did, where they succeeded, where they failed, and why.
