Course Descriptions: Spring 2014 - HTY 104 (001): The United States Survey from Reconstruction till the Present

Instructor:  Howard Segal

Time:  Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; 11:00 – 11:50 am

Description:  This course traces major developments in American history from the mid-nineteenth-century) after the Civil War of 1861-1865 until the present. In doing so it offers historical perspectives on many recent events and trends. Most American history survey courses still concentrate on political, diplomatic, economic, and social history. These will all be covered here. In addition, however, the course will examine how the United States evolved from a predominantly rural, agricultural society before the Civil War into a major urban, industrial, and technological world power in the twentieth-century.
