Course Descriptions: Fall 2013 - HTY 402: Roman History

Instructor:  Jay Bregman

Time:  Tuesday and Thursday, 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Description:  We will study the rise of Rome from a small City-State to in Italy to pre-eminence in the ancient world. Its expansion and empire, the creation of a “universal civilization” of diverse peoples from London to the Euphrates (in present day Iraq) and the challenges and responses to the many changes it faced.  The legacy of the  Roman world; Senate, Republic,  Empire, Greek Philosophy, Roman Law, the rise of “Abrahamic” Monotheisms in late antiquity, which provided the roots for later civilizations, from medieval to modern times.

Requirements: 2 Prelims and a Final exam; one paper 10 (full)-15+ pp (grad level 15-25) on topics to be announced.
