Success Stories - Christopher McCarty

Hometown: Bangor, Maine

Undergrad: Biology, UMaine

GSBS Concentration: Molecular and Cellular Biology, Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory

Adviser: James Coffman, Mount Desert Island Biological Lab

Research: McCarty studies sea urchins as a model for developmental biology. His focus is on the cyclin D gene and how its sequence regulates when and where it is switched on and off during development. The gene is known to misexpress in a large variety of cancers.

In his words: “You have to find out how something works normally before you can understand how something goes wrong. In addition to furthering knowledge of basic developmental biology, this could have implications for better understanding the development of cancers where cyclin D is misregulated, and neurodegenerative diseases where this gene is misregulated.”
