UMaine faculty members and staff members are encouraged to contact their health care providers if they develop symptoms. While the university will work with regional and state public health officials to provide vaccinations as appropriate, UMaine’s health-care personnel and resources will be consumed by addressing student needs in the event of a significant outbreak.
Faculty members and staff members are asked to stay at home if they develop flu symptoms or need to care for a family member with the flu. Disability leave provisions vary by bargaining unit and employee group, with specific guidelines available at the University of Maine System website. A list of general guidelines may also be useful.
Government health officials have developed recommendations for protecting oneself from the H1N1 virus, along with a helpful fact sheet about caring for a person with H1N1 at home.
The UMaine provost’s office and Faculty Senate have developed guidelines related to continuation of academic programming in the event of an outbreak at UMaine. Professors are advised to visit the Faculty Senate folder on FirstClass for more information.
Specific information for supervisors may help with preliminary planning and managing an outbreak, should one occur. Supervisors may also contact the Dept. of Human Resources for more information and/or advice.
