Prospective members and guests,
Welcome to the website of the Interfraternity Council.
Fraternity life here at the University of Maine seeks to encompass four core values; academics, community service, involvement and community building.
The main pursuit of fraternities here at UMaine is scholarship. As an undergraduate student at an institution of higher learning, you have invested a lot of time and money with the goal of obtaining a degree, a goal we want to help you accomplish. Each individual chapter as well as the UMIFC as a whole has high academic standards and programs in place to ensure you are reaching your full academic potential. The goal of Greek Life here at UMaine is to advance your education, not hinder it.
In the aggregate, Greek Life does more community service and raises more money for charity than any other student organization on campus. Last year alone, we raised over $55,000 philanthropic purposes and logged thousands of hours of community service. Each chapter is dedicated to raising money for local, national and even international causes.
Greek life at UMaine comprises approximately 9% of the student body. Despite this figure, the majority of leadership positions on campus are held by Greeks. Greeks are involved all across campus, whether it be Student Government, the club hockey team or the student portfolio investment fund (SPIFFY), you’ll more than likely find Greeks there.
If you were to ask a group of fraternity men what they value most about Greek Life, you would get one answer; brotherhood. Obviously that sense of family is strongest within the members of an individual chapter, but it extends throughout Greek life and to the surrounding community as well.
Greek Life has so much to offer here at UMaine. Even if you have never thought about joining a fraternity, I would encourage you to look into it. When I came to college I never thought I would pledge a fraternity, but looking back, it was definitely one of the better decisions I’ve made.
