Grow Food in Raised Beds, Containers with UMaine Extension

Raised bed gardensUniversity of Maine Cooperative Extension is offering a six-class workshop on building, planting, maintaining, and harvesting square-foot gardens in raised beds and containers.

Classes meet monthly from May through October at the UMaine Extension office, 7 County Drive, Skowhegan. The first class is 9-11 a.m. May 1; the final class is Oct. 9. UMaine Extension Somerset County staff will teach the classes and local Master Gardener Volunteers will work with participants in demonstration gardens throughout the growing season. Harvested produce will be shared with area schools and senior and food kitchen programs.

Learn to Grow Hops at Home

Growing hops in the garden at home is the focus of a workshop Tuesday, April 1, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Nokomis Regional High School, 266 Williams Road, Newport.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension and RSU 19 Adult Education are sponsoring the workshop, which will cover the history of hops production in New England, what is needed for hops to thrive in Penobscot County, basics of planting and care, pests that can affect hops, and harvesting.

Donna Coffin, Extension Educator in Piscataquis and Penobscot counties and statewide resource for the Maine beef and equine industries, will lead the workshop. UMaine Extension Offers Free Apple Tree Pruning Field Day

Pruning a fruit tree branchThe University of Maine Cooperative Extension is offering a free apple tree pruning and grafting field day Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Avalon Acres Orchard & Farm, 234 Dexter Road, in Saint Albans.

Avalon Acres owner Mark Sheriff, an alumnus of the UMaine Extension Master Gardener Volunteers program, will host. He’ll present information about general planting and management practices for apple trees then demonstrate pruning and grafting in the orchard. Apple tree growers and people who plan to plant apple trees this spring are invited to attend.

Pre-registration is requested but not required. Attendees should wear footwear appropriate for walking on uneven terrain. Rain date is Saturday, April 26. Learn to make cheese, produce maple syrup at Rural Living Day

Maple sap buckets on trees.University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Waldo County Extension Association are offering more than 20 workshops and seminars at the 20th Rural Living Day on Saturday, March 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Mount View High School in Thorndike.

Attendees can learn to make cheese, brew beer, produce maple syrup, and attract native pollinators to farms and gardens. Activities for youth ages 6-12 have been added and include gardening, cooking, and outdoors exploration. Presenters include: UMaine Extension specialists; John Bunker, author and apple expert; and Jim Merkel, author and director of the Global Living Project in Belfast, Maine.

A suggested donation of $20 for adults and $5 for youth covers three workshops and lunch made from local food. Rural Living Day proceeds fund a scholarship that Waldo County Extension Association presents annually to a Waldo County student pursuing higher education.

Become a Community Resource For Food Preservation, Safety

Preparing for canningUniversity of Maine Cooperative Extension is offering a 10-session Master Food Preserver training program starting June 19 and ending Sept. 25.

Lectures, discussions and hands-on kitchen lab education will be conducted 10 Thursdays, 5:30-8:30 p.m., at Gorham Middle School, 106 Weeks Road, Gorham, and at the UMaine Extension Office, 75 Clearwater Drive, Falmouth.

A Master Food Preserver is a UMaine Extension volunteer who has successfully completed the practical, research-based program on food safety and preservation. Volunteers agree to give back 20 hours of time for community-based projects within a year. Projects could include hands-on food preservation workshops, staffing educational displays and demonstrations and providing information at farmers’ markets, county fairs, and other food-related events.

Master Gardener Volunteer Training starts Jan.23

Maine Master Gardener Volunteer with participants of Kids Can GrowApplications are available for the 2014 Master Gardener Volunteer training with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in York County.

From Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, through early June, participants will receive more than 66 hours of in-depth horticultural training. Classes will meet weekly each Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Anderson Learning Center, 21 Bradeen St., Springvale, Maine.

The winter program focus will be on growing fruits and vegetables. UMaine Extension specialists, county educators and other experts will train volunteers in a number of areas, including soils, botany, composting, starting seeds and pest management.

Master Gardener Volunteers are required to give back 40 hours of volunteer time by providing outreach education in gardening and community service projects, including with demonstration gardens, Maine Harvest for Hunger, “Kids Can Grow” and Garden Angel programs.

Master Gardener Volunteer working in vegetable gardenApplications are open for Master Gardener Volunteer Training beginning Sept.10, 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Piscataquis County office, 165 East Main St., Dover-Foxcroft.

The 14-week program will focus on the art and science of growing garden vegetables and fruits, including soil and plant nutrition, botany, plant health and garden management. Program graduates then have the opportunity to give back to their communities by volunteering their time and skills.

Program fees are on a sliding scale, from $110 to $330, based on annual household income. A limited number of scholarships are available. All financial information is confidential. Applications are due Sept. 6.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension is again offering Kids Can Grow, a youth gardening program for ages 6-12, at the Knox-Lincoln counties office in Waldoboro. The program has six hands-on gardening classes of fun, engaging science, art and cooking activities related to growing vegetables for healthy eating. The classes will be held from 3:30-6:00 p.m., on Wednesdays — May 1, May 15, June 19, July 17, August 7, and September 11. Youngsters design and grow group gardens at the Extension office, as well as their own 3×5-foot raised bed gardens at home using supplied materials and home visit help from a Master Gardener or 4-H volunteer mentor, who will mentor and inspire them. The garden produce grown at the county office will be donated to Maine Harvest for Hunger. A fee of $20 per participant includes healthy snacks, project supplies, and all materials for each youth’s home gardens. UMaine Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Training Offered in Bangor

BANGOR, ME –Enrollment is now open for the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer training in Penobscot county.  UMaine Extension Horticulturist Kate Garland will collaborate with experts from around the state to present a 13-week course on sustainable horticulture topics including: botany, plant propagation, soils, composting, landscape design, pesticide safety, insects and plant diseases, ecology, plant selection, and more. All meetings will take place on Tuesday evenings 5:00-8:15 beginning in March, with the exception of one Saturday morning session on March 16th.
