Jonathan Foster named Outstanding Graduate Student in Horticulture program

Jonathan was nominated by his advisors, Drs. Lois Stack and Stephanie Burnett, who provided the following information.

Jonathan has done a great job on his thesis research project, which explored
the effects of light, water, and soil nutrition on propagation of an
uncommon native plant, twinflower (Linnaea borealis).  He thoughtfully
examined his project from horticultural, ecological, and industry
perspectives, which made his work more impactful and interesting. He
connected with industry partners very early in this project, and those
partners will directly benefit from the results of his research.

In addition to conducting his research, Jonathan provided important
service to the University of Maine’s plant science academic community.
He taught Plant Propagation, a writing-intensive 400-level course,
completely independently in spring 2013. To our knowledge, he is the
only M.S. student to have provided this high level of teaching service
while completing his degree requirements.
