MF 057 David Smith: History of the University of Maine Project

At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a University of Maine graduate student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono. The student reports that they are at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services, including the Orono Fire Department, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps, University of Maine Police Department, Orono Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The university vehicle involved in the incident was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 and the Dean of Students Office can be reached at 207-581-1406.

The scene has been cleared and Long Road is now accessible. An investigation is being conducted by the University of Maine Police Department with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. NA0586 Mrs. and Mr. William Schrumpf, interviewed by Shirley Anderson Tardiff, winter 1971, Orono, Maine. Mrs. Schrumpf talks about being the assistant State 4-H Club leader that UMaine; a Home Economics graduate of UMaine in 1925; instructor in Home Economics in Food Preservation and in Forestry, cooking for me in Forestry course; assistant to the Alumni Director at UMaine; campus in the 1920s; working; social life of the students. Mr. Schrumpf talks about coming to UMaine in 1908; campus then; money; attitude toward education and professors; hazing; being a chapter advisor; graduate school; the Depression; rules for female students; Bangor fire of 1910; tuition; Dr. Edith Patch, the first women that worked the experiment station; how things changed; social life of the students. NA0589 Florence Dinsmore, interviewed by Shirley Anderson Tardiff, March 16, 1971, Orono, Maine. Dinsmore talks about being a secretary at UMaine starting in June of 1923 as a mimeograph clerk in Winslow Hall for the Cooperative Extension Service; then working with Dean Leon S. Merrill, who was the Dean of the College of Agriculture; then working as a secretary to President Boardman in Alumni Hall in the President’s office until she retired in 1969; the different UMaine presidents and acting presidents; the campus and area during that time; different faculty members (Professor Patty Huddleston); the great breeding experiment; changes.
