This is a pilot program to incentivize faculty members to develop methods, other than traditional textbooks, to deliver course content. The primary goal of the program is to reduce students’ educational expenses. The secondary goal is to enhance pedagogy through the use of innovative course delivery methods. Five (5) grants of $2000 each will be awarded to support the development of cost-saving ways to deliver course content while maintaining or improving the quality of student learning. Faculty are invited to propose how they would redesign a course to exclude the purchase or rental of physical or digital-access textbooks (the use of other e-components is allowed). Existing textbook alternatives already in use by faculty will not be considered. Grants are $2000 per proposal whether faculty apply individually or in groups.
Full-time tenure-track and full-time non-tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply.
Part-time faculty, post-docs, and graduate students are ineligible.

A review committee chaired by the Associate Provost for the Division of Lifelong Learning will evaluate applications and make awards based on the following criteria:
Successful applicants will receive half of the award at the beginning of the project and half at the end of the semester in which the project has been implemented.
Awardees will be asked to submit a brief report to Provost Hecker and Associate Provost LaRocque at the end of the semester in which the project has been implemented. This report should answer the following questions:

The Textbook Alternative Initiative is funded by the Offices of the President and the Provost and is administered by the Provost, with the Associate Provost for the Division of Lifelong Learning serving in an advisory capacity.
