Student Activities - Horticulture Club

Created in 1989, the Horticulture Club serves as an academic group for the UMaine community as a way to expand students’ formal education with exposure to some of the many facets in the field of Horticulture through activities such as, guest speakers, garden shows and plant sales.

Funded by the student government, annual plant sales, and by membership fees, the Club is run by its student members and elected officers who collectively determine the direction of the Club and plan its activities.

The meetings, which have an informal setting, provide information on various current activities and allows for the opportunity to plan future projects.

Activities:

The Bangor Garden Show is a yearly project in which the ENH students can demonstrate their creativity in garden design. The show also gives students the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in every aspect of landscaping from the preliminary drawing to the planting of the last shrub. Students work on garden design, collecting the plant material needed, and constructing the final exhibit itself.

New England Grows is one of the largest Green Industry trade shows in North America. The Horticulture Club has sponsored one-day field trips to this event.  It’s an event where students can take advantage of the many horticulture-related lectures; meet with exhibitors and alumni plus possible job interviews. The Environmental Horticulture Program is a Co-Sponsor of New England Grows.
