Alumni - Andrew Nelson
Andrew Nelson received a B.S. in Natural Resources (currently the EES program) from the University of Maine in 1997. He is currently working at AMEC Earth & Environmental in Westford, MA, as a project manager in the information management group. He has been working at AMEC for ten years in several roles such as environmental scientist, data manager, IT specialist, and project manager. AMEC is a global firm headquartered in London, UK providing high-power and process industries.
Locally, AMEC’s focus can be segmented into four service areas: human heath and ecological risk assessment, hazardous waste, environmental management, compliance and permitting, and GIS services and applications. According to the worldwide Dow Jones Sustainability Index, AMEC has been ranked one of the world’s top five companies for sustainability.
Working at AMEC as a Project Manager, Andrew’s job is to design and manage environmental databases and websites containing chemical, geological, geographical, and document data. To do this, he coordinates with data validators, chemists, geologists, GIS specialists, and project managers to display and analyze environmental data. Andrew manages environmental database and website development projects where tasks include interacting with clients, leading technical teams, and managing finances. He has also performed environmental fieldwork such as delineations of wetlands and collection of biological, soil, sediment, and water samples. Working for AMEC has allowed Andrew to travel to Australia, UK, Canada, and throughout the U.S. on both project and marketing missions.
Andrew credits EES coursework focusing on developing scientific technical writing skills as a major area that prepared him for his professional environmental career. He noted that “those courses taught him to write in a concise, detailed manner that translates directly to ‘real world’ environmental reports.” Andrew also credits the direction of Mark Anderson and the EES staff in “providing constructive guidance and practical support with
