Meet Our Students - Julia McGuire
What year and semester did you begin EES graduate studies?
What degree are you pursuing?
Who is your academic advisor?
Dr. Xuan Chen
What prior degrees do you have?
B.S. in Ecology & Environmental Sciences, Concentration Resource & Environmental Policy from University of Maine
Why did you choose to attend grad school at UMaine? Why did you choose EES?
The research opportunities and ability to work with interdisciplinary, intelligent, and fun teams of students and professors was something that other schools were not offering to the same extent as the EES Program at UMaine.
Briefly describe the research project you are working on.
I am looking at food systems both in Maine and outside of Maine. I am interested in how the extensive networks of food systems diffuse and succeed and what are the requirements for stability?
What has been your favorite classes at UMaine so far?
My favorite class at UMaine so far has been SIE 512 Spatial Analysis with Dr. Mary Kate Beard-Tisdale. It was challenging and interesting and it will be very useful in my research. I am also able to read more critically articles that use spatial analysis in research.
What has been your most rewarding research experience and why?
My research goals are to understand better food systems in Maine and hopefully provide some insight as a result.
What advice do you have for prospective graduate students?
EES allows for much flexibility in coursework and research topics. I would recommend using that opportunity to create a portfolio of experiences that help you do the research that you find interesting and rewarding.
Are you interested in mentoring undergraduates?
