Meet Our Students - Judy Colby-George
What year and semester did you begin EES graduate studies?
What degree are you pursuing?
Who are your academic advisors?
Dr. Kathleen Bell and Charlie Colgan
What prior degrees do you have?
B.S. in Land Resources Management from University of Wisconsin, Madison
M.S. in Geography from University of Wisconsin, Madison
Why did you choose to attend grad school at UMaine? Why did you choose EES?
I was drawn to the Sustainability Solutions Initiative. I currently work with communities as a GIS Consultant and I am very interested in how to help people incorporate science into policy making.
Briefly describe the research project you are working on.
I work within the Sustainability Solutions Initiative on the Sustainable Urban Regions project. My portion of this project is to look at how geospatial models are used to help stakeholders understand urban growth and options they might use to better manage that growth.
What have been your favorite classes at UMaine so far?
Dr. Jim Wilson’s SMS 552: Coupled Natural & Human Systems and Dr. Tim Waring’s ECO 581: Modelling Sustainability
What has been your most rewarding research experience and why?
I have really enjoyed the challenge of returning to research in general after 20 years of practice.
What advice do you have for prospective graduate students?
Even though you get busy, make time to talk to as many other students and faculty as you can. It is a great group of people who have enriched my experience and education. The informal learning that takes place in these settings is very valuable.
Are you interested in mentoring undergraduates?
No, because I am not on campus enough to be particularly helpful.
