Reading Recovery - Teacher Training and Continued Professional Development

  • Reading Recovery teacher training follows an apprenticeship model which combines theory and practice as teachers actively work with four students during the day while taking a two-semester graduate level course.
  • Each teacher is involved in designing individual literacy lessons for their students, administering daily assessments to monitor student progress, and collecting and analyzing data under the guidance of a Teacher Leader.
  • Ongoing coaching sessions with the Teacher Leader provide further assistance to the new teacher in teaching for accelerated learning and processing of text in reading and writing.
  • Trained teachers attend ongoing professional development sessions as well as receive continual coaching from peers and teacher leaders.

University of Maine Training Center for Reading Recovery

The University Training Center for Reading Recovery provides professional development courses for educators who support students in K-6 settings.  These courses are offered statewide at regional sites and include:

  • Reading Recovery (ERR 535 and ERR 536) for interventionists supporting students in grade 1
  • Literacy Intervention Designed for Individuals Learners I & II (EEL 547 and EEL 548) - In 2005 Dr. Marie Clay developed Literacy Lessons Designed for Individuals  to provide training for specialist teachers, including Special Education teachers and ELL teachers, who want to expand their teaching repertoire drawing on the literacy processing theory and model of professional development that informs Reading Recovery. Educators who participate in EEL 547/548  undertake a year-long, 6 credit course of study that focuses on the development of individually designed and individually delivered instruction for students from special populations who are struggling to develop literacy processing systems in reading and writing. Data gathered in Maine over a 3 year period indicate that literacy interventions for individual learners, based on the text Literacy Lessons Designed for Individuals, is highly successful for students from special populations, K-6.
  • Literacy Processing (EEL 549) for classroom teachers supporting students within K-6 classroom settings
  • Comprehensive Intervention Model (CIM) small group interventions (EEL 651) for educators supporting students in K-8 contexts
  • Small Group Interventions for Middle and High School Students (ERL 590)
