Literacy Education - Doctoral Program in Literacy Education

The doctoral program in Literacy Education is no longer accepting applications for the Fall 2014 semester.

The doctoral program is designed for individuals exhibiting leadership in literacy, such as curriculum development, teacher research, publishing, professional presentations and theoretical research traditions. It prepares candidates for university positions, positions in administration and supervision of literacy programs at the local, state and federal level. A primary function of the program is to develop competency in diverse epistemologies and methodologies framing the study of literacy in diverse settings.

The hallmarks of the Literacy Education program are its selectivity, small size and close mentoring by national recognized faculty. Enrollment is limited to no more than 12 students total, to ensure quality and close relationships with faculty. We prepare doctoral students as literacy leaders and advocates. While in the program, students have opportunities ranging from writing and reviewing manuscripts for publication, to teaching courses with senior faculty, to writing major grants, to developing research studies using a range of methodologies.

Many of our graduates choose to work at top research universities after completing the program. Others serve as curriculum leaders throughout the state and country in a variety of educational settings.

Program of Study for the Doctor of Education in Literacy Education

1. Literacy (minimum 15 credit hours). Of the required credit hours, at least twelve must involve doctoral-level seminars. It is assumed that applicants are graduates of a literacy master’s degree program. For students with different backgrounds, a core of at least 15 credits of literacy coursework at the master’s level is required.

2. Research methods (minimum 12 credit hours). Students are required to complete a minimum of 4 research methods courses. These should include at least one course in advanced qualitative or quantitative research methods.

3. Electives (minimum 12 credit hours outside  literacy)

4. Dissertation research (minimum 6 credit hours)
