Higher Education - Student Testimonials

“First of all, I miss each of you so much!! Secondly, I want to make sure I thanked you all for your help, knowledge, and skills throughout grad school. Having only been in my new position for going on four weeks, I have already used almost everything each of you have taught me – and I know I will only continue to use more. Your collective knowledge has made the two years I spent at the University of Maine incredibely useful and relevant and, as I said, it’s only been three weeks. Everyday I feel like I am in Capstone researching my every move and finding theoretical frameworks to ground my decisions. The tools I was given through the Student Development in Higher Ed program as well as the Division of Student Affairs at UMaine have allowed me to jump right in to GW and make decisions and produce ideas that are grounded in theory and education. Sooo… Thank You!!!!!

When people complain in class that you’re making them do too much, tell them to shut their mouths and pay attention because every piece of knowledge you all have given me has made me a competent and confident individual in the work place. For all of this, I owe you all so much.”
-Justina DeMott

“My experience in the Student Development in Higher Education program was definitely a positive one. The internship experiences I had both on campus and off were invaluable. Having those real world experiences have been of enormous help while transitioning into a professional position. Between the internship experiences, coursework, and professional development opportunities I gained while at the University of Maine, I really feel like I am an asset to my employer and team at Emory University.”
-Lauren Hayden Dyer, M.Ed. 2008

“As a graduate of the Higher Education program at the University of Maine I am very thankful for the one-on-one attention and dedication I received from my professors and especially my advisor. The faculty really took their time to get to know me and help me focus on my individual goals both in and outside of the classroom. They gave me the tools I needed to start a successful career after graduation.”
-Victoria Caron, M.Ed., 2009

“I am proud of my doctoral experience at the University of Maine. The faculty had high expectations of and support for students, and were incredibly motivating, exposing me to new ideas. In one course, through a research assignment, I was inspired to think differently about the role of policy as a strategy in higher education and was introduced to theories of discourse—this fueled my scholarly interests and emerged as the focus for my dissertation. My advisor, Dr. Elizabeth Allan, was a phenomenal mentor, who, through nominations, recommendations, referrals, and scholarly collaborations, was instrumental in shaping my role and potential as a current faculty member. Finally, the program offered courses through various ‘platforms’ -some are face-to-face, some hybrid, and a few online. While I was physically at the UMaine campus, the distance options were an asset to many peers, and pushed my thinking, as both a student and a teaching assistant who delivered courses using distance technology, about teaching and learning environments and the possibilities with various instructional approaches.”
-Susan V. Iverson, Ed.D., 2005
