The overall purpose of the Internship course is to provide the environment within which an athletic training student can develop necessary skills and knowledge and connect coursework to patient care. This 300 hour, 6 credit course is the final athletic training course and should not be taken until you have completed all other AT Education courses.
The internship provides the ATS with an opportunity for continuous contact with the same group of patients and supervisors over a relatively long period of time. This provides an opportunity for the ATS to:
You, the student, are responsible for researching and securing your internship experience. Remember to use the contacts around you including ATC’s, physicians, former UMaine athletic training students and anyone else who might assist you. You should become quite serious with this search during the first semester of your third academic year. It is the student who works at finding the “right internship” for her/him who has a successful experience. Don’t wait for the last minute or settle for the first thing you come across.
As you approach this time, please contact the Program Director for an Internship Packet. This packet includes instructions for you (the prospective intern) and for your potential supervisor, a syllabus, and evaluations. All internship experiences must be cleared by the Program Director prior to beginning the experience.
