Each ATS is required to complete a minimum of 1,000 supervised clinical observation and experience hours while in the Athletic Training Education Program. The time period for this can be no less than 2 years. Each clinical observation and experience is a course within the curriculum. Each student must be registered for the appropriate course while they are earning clinical experience hours.
Each student must participate in athletic practices and competitive events in each of the following settings;
The earlier experiences will include more than one setting per course to enable the ATS to become familiar with ATC’s and to experience the diversity of the Athletic Training profession. Level 2 and Level 3 ATS clinical experiences will continue throughout the full season of that particular sport. The ATS will be required to complete at least one collegiate experience with a team of the opposite sex. The ATS will also be required to complete at least one experience outside of the University of Maine Athletic Department.
While it is sometimes difficult to balance clinical experiences with the rest of the students collegiate life, it is very important to make the attempt. The following are some helpful guidelines:
Non-University of Maine Clinical Experience Site
You will be completing one aspect of your Clinical Experiences off campus. In order to ensure continuity of educational practices, your supervisor at each off campus site has been trained as an ACI, is familiar with the Athletic Training Education Program, and is committed to providing a positive learning environment for you. In lieu of this being an allied health setting, the University of Maine requires each setting to provide proof of liability insurance for you, the student. If you have any questions regarding this please contact the Athletic Training Education Program Director.
