These students are using technology as a tool to learn and as a means to help them function and survive in today’s fast-paced society. My role as the classroom teacher is to support them during their quest to find their personal potential. Enrolling as a graduate student at UMaine, in order to earn my Master’s degree in Instructional Technology, was a perfect fit to meet not only my professional needs, but personal as well, as this was a goal I had set for myself when I began teaching. I live in Aroostook County, two hours north of Orono, and found the convenience of the IT program and its online course selection to be both challenging and accommodating. Faculty encouraged me to implement current research theories and best practices in order to create projects that could be used in my classroom. Designed: to meet the need for graduate-level training in effective, innovative use of current and emerging technology in Maine’s schools. The required coursework, research and clinical experiences are directed at producing highly marketable educational leaders who can build school capacity to continually assess and upgrade the technology available to teachers and students. Based on International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) standards.
- Enhance learning in K-12 classrooms by integrating knowledge of learning and teaching with knowledge of educational technology, media and instructional methods
- Apply and evaluate applications of technology to specific instructional situations and develop materials and strategies needed to enhance learning
- Plan, implement and evaluate mediated instructional and educational technology delivery systems based on knowledge of research
- Evaluate existing instructional technology hardware and software resources in a school or school district and plan, implement and evaluate changes needed to heighten teaching and learning
- Evaluate the instructional technology knowledge and skill levels of teachers, administrators and other school staff and provide needed training and support.
Pre-requisites: A bachelor’s degree, education preferred.
Credits: minimum of 36
Thesis: Non-thesis (1 seminar, 1 practicum)
Endorsement: After satisfactorily completing specified courses students may earn the Maine Department of Education 680 (Computer Teacher) endorsement.
Scheduling: Students typically take one course per semester in the spring and fall plus one or two summer courses. It is possible to finish the degree, full time, in one year, including two summers. We have many online and distance education options as well as out-reach opportunities; Face-to-face classes are held in the evenings.

Curriculum: We do not have a strict sequence of classes but EDT 520 is typically the first class taken. Subsequent courses are determined in conjunction with student’s adviser.
