Dr. Laura R. Shannonhouse is an Assistant Professor in the Counselor Education Program at the University of Maine. Dr. Shannonhouse’s interests focus on multicultural training in counseling, with an emphasis on community engagement, clinical outreach, crisis intervention, disaster response, aging, and development across the lifespan. Her research and clinical work have included working with marginalized populations in a variety of contexts (e.g. crisis center, cancer center, college counseling center, hospital, disaster impacted communities, etc.).
Some of Dr. Shannonhouse’s clinical outreach experiences include:
- AMCD & ACES sponsored outreaches in Southern Africa/Botswana (illness-related trauma counseling),
- Daycare center fire disaster in Hermosillo, Mexico (49 children died in and >60 injured),
- Haitian refugees living in Orlando and Miami post-earthquake,
- Assisted with development and facilitation of study abroad course in Costa Rica,
- Helping select students for study abroad, along with providing a processing model for re-entry, and
- Services to post-Katrina teachers in New Orleans
Through these experiences, Dr. Shannonhouse became curious about the degree to which counselor training programs incorporate international activities into counselor preparation. This investigation included national surveys and site visits to counselor education programs across the United States, which resulted a study that examined the relationships between 510 counselor-trainee’s (a) multicultural counseling competence, (b) cultural immersion experiences, and (c) cognitive/emotional developmental styles.
Dr. Shannonhouse has disseminated her work through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at local, national, and international conferences. She has received research and best practice grants from the Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors (ACES), Southern Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors (SACES), and Chi Sigma Iota International. In 2011, Dr. Shannonhouse received the Courtland C. Lee Multicultural Excellence Scholarship Award, from the American Counseling Association (ACA) for work that demonstrates excellence in the theory and practice of Multicultural Counseling. She was named an Emerging Leader and Fellow by the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES) in 2012, and an International Intern and Fellow for Chi Sigma Iota (2011). Dr. Shannonhouse is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the State of North Carolina, is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), and an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Trainer (ASIST).
Dr. Shannonhouse completed her Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2013. She received her M.Ed. and Ed.S. degrees in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Florida. She also has a Bachelors of Science from the University of Florida in Sociology.
