Maine Harvest for Hunger - What is Gleaning?
Gleaning is an ancient tradition still practiced in Cumberland County and elsewhere. After farmers or fruit growers have harvested their crop, they allow people into their fields or orchards to gather the fruit that they did not harvest.
Several Cumberland County farmers and fruit growers have agreed to support Maine Harvest for Hunger by contacting the UMaine Extension Cumberland County office when they have an opportunity for Maine Harvest for Hunger participants to come to gather the remaining, unharvested produce that will then be donated to local food pantries.
If you would like to volunteer as a Maine Harvest for Hunger Gleaner, please send an e-mail to the UMaine Extension Cumberland County office with your name, telephone number, and e-mail address.
