The University of Maine Cooperative Extension will be offering two Ikebana classes, featuring Ikebana Expert, Lara Chho. The classes will be held Tuesday, July 17, 6:oo – 8:30 PM and Thursday, July 19, 1:00 – 3:30 PM at the Cumberland Extension Office at the UMaine Regional Learning Center, 75 Clearwater Drive in Falmouth.  Registration is $10. Students should bring the following materials to class: Flat bottom shallow wide container (suiban) and a metal frog (kenzan) OR a tall vase (nageire) no metal frog needed, cutting scissors, bowl for cutting in water, newspaper, 1-2 branch type materials, 3-5 flowers, Several green leaves or hosta leaves. Fresh material from your own garden would be wonderful and personal.

“Ikebana is the art of Japanese flower arranging done according to strict guidelines.” Ikebana derives from the Japanese ‘ike’ (arrange), and ‘hana’ (flower). Lara lives in Japan. We are happy that she is making herself available to teach this class while she is visiting Maine. In class Lara will assemble two or more large Ikebana pieces. Following a short presentation on the history of Ikebana, she will lead a hands-on workshop where participants will make their own take-home piece.
