4-H Summer of Science

On June 24, eleven Cumberland County teenagers learned 4-H science and nutrition principles. They worked with Mitch Mason, Sarah Sparks and Kathy Savoie of UMaine Extension to learn hands-on activities

that they will bring to over 200 kids in July and August. The goal will be to get Maine kids drinking more water, being more physically active, sitting less in front of a screen and eating more vegetables and fruits. The teens also heard from Donald Thompson, president of a 4-H SNAP club in Decatur, Illinois (via video conferencing) and from Ansel Critchfield, a Casco 4-H teen who is part of the national training program.

The teens are part of the 4-H Summer of Science and will be teaching younger kids about the science behind healthy eating and physical activity. The 4-H Summer of Science is coming to several Summer Feed sites around Portland and Gorham in conjunction with Portland Housing Authority, Preble Street, Baxter Memorial Library, Portland Recreation Department, Reiche School and Opportunity Alliance Parkside Neighborhood Center. The program is funded through a grant from National 4-H Council in partnership with the Walmart Foundation.
