2012 Sheep Shearing Schools – Beginner & Blade

BEGINNER SHEEP SHEARING SCHOOLS IN WINDHAM AND LITTLETON, MAINE

There are two beginner level shearing schools planned for spring 2012. One is scheduled for Saturday, Aapril 21, 2012 at Northstar Farm on Stevens Road in Windham (Cumberland County). The other is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2012 on the farm of Fred Arledge in Littleton, Maine (Aroostook County). Each school starts at 8:30 AM and goes until mid-afternoon.

School information is as follows:

  • A $35.00 fee is being charged to participants who wish to learn to shear.
  • Each participant will shear up to 3 sheep depending on the shearer’s strength and ability.
  • Experienced shearers will instruct and direct the learners in the New Zealand method of sheep shearing.
  • Stand shearing of sheep will be demonstrated for those who may want to learn an alternative method
  • Each participant will receive an informational packet on the topic of sheep shearing.
  • A light lunch and drinks will be provided as part of the course fee.

If you are interested in participating, please print out the complete the 2012 beginner sheep shearing registration form and return it as soon as possible with your payment to: UMaine Extension, 75 Clearwater Drive, Falmouth, ME 04105. Your payment can also be transacted with a credit card by calling in your registration to the UMaine Extension Cumberland County office at 207-781-6099 or 1-800-287-1471 (in Maine). Each school is limited to 22 participants. The schools fills up quickly.

Anyone who wishes to watch sheep being shorn is welcome to attend for free.

BLADE SHEARING SCHOOL IN NEW GLOUCESER, MAINE

A blade shearing school is planned for Friday, March 30, 2012 at Shaker Village, 707 Shaker Rd in New Gloucester, Maine. Participants will be shearing a flock of Romney sheep. The instructor for this hands-on school is renowned blade shearer, Kevin Ford of Massachusetts. The cost of the school is $80 per person and includes reference materials and lunch.

The school is limited to 8 participants. This school is more appropriate for those individuals with some shearing experience. However, a novice could find it suitable.

Hand shears will be provided for your use in learning. You may purchase hand shears from Kevin following the school if you are interested.
