Grow Your Own Organic Garden in partnership with Gorham Adult Ed

Are you concerned about the rising cost of food? Unsure what the term “certified organic” means? Interested in learning how to grow your own vegetables in sustainable manner? Join us for an evening workshop on how to grow your own garden. We’ll talk about the basics of soil science and how to enrich your soil to produce healthy, high-yielding plants. The course will also cover the basics of making and using compost, the principles of crop rotation and how to incorporate green manures and manage nutrients in the garden. Other topics will include how to tell the difference between cultivated plants and weeds, basic weed control strategies, and common insect pests and methods of natural insect control. Richard Brzozowski has served as an Extension Educator for the University of Maine Cooperative Extension since 1987. He is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating educational programs for farmers and gardeners in Cumberland County. He currently serves on the Maine Master Gardener Development Board. Annual Cumberland County Master Gardener’s Plant Sale
Saturday, May 19 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, Barron Center, 1145 Brighton Avenue, Portland
The sale features herbs, vegetable seedlings, geraniums, dahlias, houseplants, and rare perennials with Master Gardener volunteers on hand to share growing tips and advice. It is the largest fundraiser by the Cumberland County Master Gardeners each year. New this year will be shellfish compost by the bag from Pike Industries.

FAMACHA workshops are designed to equip sheep and goat producers with the skills and knowledge to determine the degree of infection of Haemonchus contorutus (barber pole worm) in sheep and goats using blood color of the capillaries around the eye. The barber pole worm is a blood sucking internal parasite that is a common cause of death and poor-doing in small ruminants. The workshops will be presented by Dr. Thomas Settlemire and Dr. Richard Brzozowski. Participants will receive an information packet, record sheets and a FAMACHA card. One or more individuals from each farm are welcome to participate. Following the FAMCHA workshop there will be a free Microscope-use workshop at 11:00 am

Rhubarb is one of Maine’s first spring foods and when it’s in season, more fruits and vegetables are soon to follow. This hands-on food preservation workshop, offered through the UMaine Cooperative Extension, will teach you the basic steps for canning and freezing rhubarb so you can enjoy it all season. Participants will will learn recommended methods for preserving foods safely. Please bring a potholder with you to the workshop. Everyone will leave with their own jar of rhubarb preserves!
