Cassie Vaillancourt of Fort Kent, Maine, has always wanted a career that would allow her to work outdoors. She found it at UMaine, through the fieldwork she did as a forestry major and as an intern for Maine-based firms such as Orion Timberlands, Huber Resources and Seven Islands Land Co.
“I really wanted a hands-on experience,” Vaillancourt says. “I learn by doing, and this program has really allowed me to do that. It’s given me practical experience that I’ve used in my summer internships and that I’ll use in the future.”
For her Honors thesis, Cassie developed and evaluated alternative management scenarios, which served as a basis for developing a management plan for UMaine’s Demeritt Forest. After she graduated in May 2010, Vaillancourt enrolled in the Maine Business School’s M.B.A. program. She intends to go on to work as a field forester.
“Having the undergraduate experience has given me all the technical skills I need — everything in that program allows you to do that.”
