Student Success Stories - Peter Drown

Peter Drown had only been at UMaine for a short while when the recession hit. Rather than get discouraged, Drown, an Economics major from Villa Park, Ill., looked to the future. He realized he’d need to find a specialty to set his resume apart. After reading the book “Apollo’s Fire: Igniting America’s Clean-Energy Economy,” he discovered his niche: renewable energy.

“It’s a great way to solve the country’s economic problems while working toward a greener future for our country,” Drown says.

Drown’s interest led him to pursue a part-time job at UMaine’s AEWC Advanced Structures and Composites Center, where he researches the costs and benefits associated with wind power for the DeepCwind Consortium. More often than not, he’ll learn a concept in class and then turn around and use it the next day at work.

“UMaine is right at the forefront of applied economics, and that makes a difference,” Drown says. “There’s a huge connection between natural resources and economics here.”

Through his academic and job experiences, he was able to land a summer internship at SMI, a government relations firm in Washington, D.C.

“At UMaine, I’ve been able to craft my educational experience to align with my career goals,” Drown says.
