Cohen Journal for Leadership and Democracy

The Cohen Journal for Leadership and Democracy (CJLD) is the University of Maine’s latest student-based research journal. Established by the Cohen Center in association with the School of International Policy and Affairs, the Department of Political Science, and the new Institute for Leadership and Democracy, the Journal will feature selected quality student research produced at Maine’s flagship institution of research and higher learning.

The annexation of Crimea has resulted in the most dramatic “cooling” of relations between the United States and Russia since the end of the Cold War. The Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear ambitions continue to pose a threat to U.S. national security and international stability. There is also a civil war taking place in Syria, and the Middle East continues to be in turmoil.

Domestically, the U.S. intelligence community is embroiled in controversy with the revelations that the National Security Agency has in the past implemented a policy of “systemic mass data collection” of U.S. citizens’ phone records. Even more recently, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Chair of the United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, has accused the Central Intelligence Agency of “spying” on the committee’s computer systems.

These events underscore the necessity for clear, thoughtful and strategic leadership, both domestically and internationally. By highlighting and publishing research produced by both undergraduate and postgraduate students, we hope to contribute to a further understanding of and enlightened dialogue on  issues of vital importance, not only to the U.S., but also to the international community.

Founded in February 2014, it is expected that the first issue of CJLD will be published in the Fall semester of 2014. CJLD will be published in a web-based format and will be available for download on a variety of University of Maine websites.
