New Students & Orientation - Non traditional Student Orientation

NEW  NON TRADITIONAL STUDENTS

Congratulations on being admitted to the University of Maine. Hopefully you have chosen to confirm. As a non-traditional student, you will be part of a special group of students who have chosen to pursue a UMaine degree while already managing many other life roles. Non-traditional students are those who have chosen to come to college several years past their graduation from high school, undergraduates who are 24 years or older, are parents themselves and/or are veterans. As the Staff Associate for Commuter and Non Traditional Student Programs (CNTSP) and Veterans Education and Transition Services (VETS), it is my role to assist you in becoming a successful, engaged UMaine student.

SUMMER ORIENTATION

By now you may have received an invitation to the UMaine Summer/June Orientation program for newly admitted students.  As you can see, new students are invited to attend an orientation program that includes an over night stay on the UMaine campus. The Summer Orientation is designed to assist you as a new student to learn more about the campus resources available to you as well as help you plan your academic program. All new students are strongly encouraged to attend the Summer Orientation program and there is no additional cost.

However, UMaine recognizes that as a non-traditional student, you may have more time constraints and some unique needs as a new student.  In light of this, I have coordinated with New Student Programs to suggest some special arrangements for your Summer Orientation program.

If the overnight stay in the residence halls and the evening social events do not meet your scheduling needs, I would suggest you plan to attend the

Alternate Non Traditional Student Summer Orientation 2013

Commuter Lounge 228, Memorial Union at 8:00AM

Day Two of your college’s scheduled summer orientation.

June,15, 16, 17, 22, 23 , or  24

This alternate schedule will work best if that Day Two is a Saturday or Sunday.

If you chose the alternative schedule for non-traditional students, you should arrive on campus by 8:00AM on Day Two and go directly to the Commuter Lounge, 228 Memorial Union. You will have a chance to meet other new nontraditional students and review the orientation schedule.  You will also have the opportunity to sign up for an M Project guide. These are nontraditional students who have been successful here at UMaine and are looking forward to helping you as you start out as an UMaine student.

At 9:00AM you can meet with other students in your college for Class Scheduling & Advising.  If you plan to stay the rest of that day, (Saturday or Sunday only) you can participate in the Information Fair and the various Information sessions. Please note there are information sessions scheduled that afternoon for veterans, athletes, transfer students and more. You can also purchase a parking pass then and have your MaineCard photo taken. The full schedule is available at: http://umaine.edu/orientation/summer-orientation/ You’ll also notice some tips for new students on the New Student Programs website.  This includes a notice to activate your Maine Street account. In addition you should activate your FirstClass account and forward your “Maine.edu” account to your FirstClass mailbox.

Be sure to register with NSO for the Summer Orientation session that you plan to attend (although you’ll arrive Day Two). You should also send a confirmation to me at Barbara.smith@umit.maine.edu or call 207 581 1734 to confirm which date you’ll be arriving the morning of Day Two. Please note that I will not be in the office June 3 – August 12, but you can leave a message. If you have questions about this alternative orientation schedule or general questions about being a nontraditional student, please feel free to contact the Deans of Students Office at 207 581 1406. If you have questions specific to being a student veteran you can contact the VETS office at 207 581 1316

M PROJECT GUIDE
Also sign up for an M Project Guide on the web site.  M Project Guides are returning UMaine students who are non traditional  students just like you and have volunteered to assist you here at UMaine. Just complete the web based application so I can match with an M Project Guide. Your M Project guide will contact you in August. New Veterans students can request a returning student veteran as an M Project Guide by registering directly at  https://umaine.edu/veterans/m-project/
