National Lab Day

About 50 Orono Middle School 8th graders and 4 of their teachers joined faculty and graduate students from the Department of Chemistry for a forensic chemistry lab activity in celebration of National Lab Day.

The OMS students used color “spot tests”, TLC (thin layer chromatography) and black lights to identify possible illegal substances. Subsequent investigations of the infrared spectra allowed them to identify the presence of compounds that “mimic” cocaine and heroine in the spot tests.

National Lab Day is more than just a day. It’s a nationwide initiative to build local communities of support that will foster ongoing collaborations among volunteers, students and educators. Click here for more information about National Lab Day [1].
