Dear Chemistry Educator:
We are pleased to contact you about several opportunities:
Merck & Co has donated over 200 copies of the Merck Index (14th edition) to the Maine Section of the American Chemical Society. We are reserving a large number for donation to our Maine high school chemistry teachers. The book contains chemical, pharmaceutical and biomedical information on more than 18,000 compounds that we know as drugs, fragrances, cosmetics, food supplements, pesticides and organic chemicals used in research. It has a number of additional tables, a glossary, structures and reactions of interest to students and teachers, as well as a periodic table of the elements. If you are interested in receiving one at no cost, please fill out the enclosed form. The Merck Indexes will be given out on a first-come first-serve basis until our supply reserved for High School teachers runs out.
We have begun planning activities for National Chemistry Week Oct. 17–23, 2010. The theme this year is “Behind the Scenes with Chemistry!” If you think you or students might be interested in coming to the University of Maine to help us celebrate, please indicate this on the enclosed form.
Finally, the University of Maine, Department of Chemistry is starting an exciting new outreach program to inform High School chemistry teachers and students about careers in chemistry, interesting workshops, summer research and other educational opportunities. If you would like to be included on our mail/email list, please indicate your interest on the enclosed form: Maine-ACS-HS-Survey
The Maine section is excited about these opportunities to help you and your students learn about chemistry. We hope to hear from you soon!
Sincerely, Robert Buntrock, Chair, Maine ACS Section
