Oct. 23, 2015 Mole Day

The ACS Student Chapter of the University of Maine, Orono, held their annual ChemFest. Local high school chemistry teachers and their students were invited to campus that afternoon and evening for a series of experiments and brief presentations, sandwiched around a pizza supper, on the 2015 NCW theme of Chemistry Colors the World. The presenters are all from the University of Maine. Dr. Andrea Mauery, Art Dept., spoke on the chemistry of art pigments, Dr. Natalie Machamer, Chemistry, spoke on the chemical forensics of art forgery detection, Dr. Sara Lindsay, Marine Sciences, spoke on bioluminescence of marine organisms, and Dr. Mike Mason, Physics, spoke on gold nano particles. The students gold nano particles, demoed chemiluminescence with luminol and bleach, prepared Prussian Blue and white paint pigment, concluded with the ever popular clock reaction. The evening was topped off with freshly prepared liquid nitrogen ice cream.

Thanks go to the UMaine Student Group, Elizabeth Grant, Chair, Will Gramlich faculty advisor, for an excellent and inspiring thematic presentation.
