Welcome to the Department of Chemistry’s website.
At the undergraduate level we offer B.S. and B.A. degrees in chemistry with optional concentrations in pre-medicine or pre-pharmacy. We have a number of scholarships available for chemistry majors at the University of Maine. Students who intend to become high school chemistry teachers, including graduate students enrolled in the Masters in Science Teaching program, are eligible for the ACS-Hach Land Grant Scholarship. We also offer a minor in chemistry, which is especially popular with students who are majoring in the biological sciences. At the graduate level, we offer M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry and we are the only graduate program in chemistry in the state of Maine. Students majoring in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering are welcome to join the American Chemical Society Student Member Group.
Our faculty have diverse interests spanning the traditional areas of organic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry, and contribute to multidisciplinary programs in Nanotechnology, Materials, Wood and Alternative Energy, Biological, Chemical Education, and Environmental chemistry. Both undergraduate and graduate students are actively engaged in conducting research with faculty. Our faculty also collaborate with scientists from across the country and around the world, bringing new perspectives for solving important research questions.
The Department is fortunate to have a dedicated group of staff and adjunct faculty. We invite you to explore our website to find out more about the Department, and if you’d like more information, please feel free to contact us.
