Abstract: There is a general consensus that algebra knowledge is necessary and beneficial to a student’s understanding and performance in general chemistry.  However, this belief is mostly based on anecdotal evidence, and as of yet, there is little systematic study of this idea.  My research seeks to look at how well students answer both algebra and chemistry content questions, and how students transfer reasoning skills from both areas to problems that  combine math and chemistry concepts.
