Career Library for students to browse.

University
of Maine Links Dealing with Diversity
There are many
organizations and departments that assist students with diversity
issues at the University of Maine. The following are links where
you can find information about some of these organizations and departments.
Students can also learn about activities and groups that are available
to join at the University of Maine, plus general information about
diversity that will be helpful.

Diversity
Resources Available at the Career Center
We receive multiple
copies of some magazines and students are welcome to take one free
of charge. A few examples of the resources that are available are:
Job Choices: Diversity Edition
- This magazine,
published by the National Association of Colleges and Employers,
is available in the Career Library and is given out to seniors
who register with the Career Center. Updated yearly, this edition
contains useful information regarding the general job hunt, such
as tips for writing resumes and cover letters, interviewing, and
how to succeed on the job. A number of articles target diverse
populations, such as "Why Minorities Should Pursue the Advanced
Degree" and "Communicating in the Culturally Diverse Workplace."
Profiles of companies that are interested in hiring a diverse
workforce are also presented.
Minority
Engineer
- This publication,
which targets a minority audience from the fields of engineering,
computer science and information-technology, is released three
times during the school year. Each issue presents an interview
with a professional who is Black, Native American, Hispanic, or
Asian American. The article topics vary, but generally deal with
specific careers within the engineering field as well as tips
on entering the workforce and succeeding on the job.
Hispanic
Network
- A quarterly
publication, this magazine highlights emerging and growing careers
in a variety of market sectors, such as technology, engineering,
business, education, healthcare, and finance. Lists of the top
companies that promote workforce & recruitment diversity as
well as those employing the most Hispanics are provided. Each
issue offers biographical sketches of successful and important
Latinos and Latinas working in a variety of industries. Examples
of feature articles are Making Diversity Work in Your Workplace
and The Status and trends in the education of Hispanics.
Woman Engineer
- Published
three times a year, this magazine is similar in scope to Minority
Engineer. Each issue presents an interview with a woman who is
making a significant difference in the field of engineering, computer
science or information technology. Articles not only discuss such
topics as ways for women to succeed in and enter into these occupations,
but also provide details regarding jobs and careers in emerging
engineering specialties.
Job Strategies
for People with Disabilities
- This book,
written by Melanie Astaire Witt, is a wonderful resource that
can be browsed in the Career Library. The self-assessment section
can be useful in helping a person figure out some possible careers
that he or she may find enjoyable. There are also tips on job
accommodations and how the Americans with Disabilities Act can
provide a framework to assist a person in a work setting.
Straight Jobs, Gay Lives
- This dense,
well-written book focuses on many issues faced by gay and lesbian
professionals in the workforce, such as coming out at work, discrimination,
harassment, how to network, and how to succeed on the job. Hundreds
of personal stories shed light on the differences between the
experiences of gay men and lesbians, while providing encouragement
and support to readers. The back of the book presents a highly
useful workplace resource guide, which includes a selected reading
list, locations of nondiscrimination policies, companies
employer policies, and gay professional organizations.
Careers and the disABLED
- Published
six times a year, this is the nations first and only career-guidance
and recruitment magazine for people with disabilities who are
professionals or students in higher education institutions. Each
issue contains feature articles as well as a special Braille section,
a diversity career directory, an overview of career strategies,
and biographical sketches of individuals with disabilities who
are accomplished role models and leaders.

specific populations that are highlighted on this web site. The information
that is contained covers a variety of topics including job listings,
information about career planning and development issues, scholarships,
and colleges. Besides career information, there are links to excellent
web sites covering lots of issues related to diversity.
African
American Resources
There
is a wealth of information available in the following links. Click
on any of the links and you may find jobs, career information, resume
referrals and postings, or internships. Some links will offer information
about scholarships, colleges, and professional organizations with
student membership. Along with this information you can find information
about businesses and other organizations with special interest in
the African American population. If you are just looking for some
interesting sites about the news, sports, or other entertainment,
some of the sites offer these, too.
Asian
American Resources
These links
will give you information about Asian culture, the 50 best and 20
worst companies to work for, and various Asian Americans professional
organizations. Also available is the opportunity to search for jobs,
either bi-lingual jobs in Asia or jobs in the United States, internships,
and scholarships. There are places where you can post resumes along
with some general information about writing a resume plus job interviewing
tips.
Franco-American
Resources
The links
that follow will allow students to explore Franco-American culture.
Here you will find information about books and newspapers that are
written by or for people of Franco-American descent. Along with other
interesting topics, information about the language and the history
of the Franco-American people can be found in these internet sites.
The following
links contain a variety of information. In them you can find information
on employment concerns, job listings and internships available with
progressive companies as well as a listing of companies with benefits
for gay and lesbian employees. There is information available for
financial aid, gay and lesbian friendly communities, help with relocation,
professional organizations, and a link for gay, lesbian, and bisexual

The international
resources offer job listings for many countries around the world.
