Historical Atlas of Maine - scholars at the University of Maine in Orono have been developing a new atlas designed to reveal the environmental, economic, social, and cultural interactions that have shaped the history of the state and region.

Maine’s Ice Age Trail: Downeast – The Ice Age had a profound effect on the Maine landscape. This effect is most pronounced in the Downeast region, where a vast sheet of glacial ice sculpted Cadillac and surrounding mountains, carved out the Sommes Sound fjord, and left spectacular sand barrens. The Ice Age Trail is comprised of the finest and most accessible of these features.
