Retirees & UMaine Employees
RETIREES: We are a membership-only provider for both the SilverSneakers and Silver & Fit® Programs. Check your health plan to see whether it offers either of these benefits. If it does, email Kristie Deschesne or call 581-3479 to find out if you qualify for a free membership!
Employee: An employee of any University of Maine campus.
UMaine Employee: An employee of the flagship University of Maine campus in Orono.
UMaine System Employee: An employee of the UMaine System Office.
Bargaining Unit: Bargaining units are, essentially, unions for University of Maine employees.
Employee voucher: Refers in a general fashion to UMaine Employees’ eligibility for unlimited visits to campus fitness facilities. On some campuses, this is represented by a paper voucher.
Voucher Pass: Employees registered under the flagship campus here in Orono, and Employees registered under the UMaine System Office, will be automatically assigned an electronic Voucher Pass in our database. There are two other qualifications required… the Employee’s bargaining unit contract must have been executed (not just ratified) and the Employee must have a MaineCard. If either of these requirements are not met, there will be no Voucher Pass in our database.
Due to the newly approved unlimited-visit Voucher program, all System-wide employees of several UMaine employee bargaining units are now eligible for free use of campus fitness facilities. If you have received an email from firstname.lastname@example.org stating this, then that means you do have an active Voucher Pass valid for visits at the Orono campus fitness facilities.
Please read on for more information about vouchers.
For now, only the groups listed below are eligible, because those are the only contracts that have been executed so far, but others will be coming on board in the future. Questions regarding your bargaining unit’s eligibility for the voucher program should be directed towards your bargaining unit.
Units With Active Voucher Passes:
The list below will be updated as soon as we receive the employee list for each newly eligible bargaining unit. If your unit’s contract has been ratified, but is not listed below, that probably means it has not been executed. Regardless, it definitely means we have not received the list of employees in that unit and therefore your Voucher Passes are not yet active in our database.
- AFUM Full-Time Faculty
- AFUM Non-Reps
- Other Non-Reps
2/24/14: We have been informed that the contract for ACSUM / COLT has been ratified but not executed. We will update this list as soon as we are given those names and the go-ahead to assign their Voucher Passes.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Don’t Live Near Orono? We can only provide guidance for you in how the voucher program works at our own facilities in Orono. That said, we’ve been told that you can use your vouchers at any UMaine campus fitness center. All the campuses are handling this a little differently so please contact HR to find out how to proceed; you may need to get a paper voucher from them. Vouchers cannot be used at non-campus fitness centers.
Visiting From Another Campus? If you are an employee registered at another campus and you would like to use the Orono campus facilities, then you can use your paper voucher for check-in.
Member Benefits: At the Orono campus, Voucher Pass holders and other full members have access to the New Balance Recreation Center, Maine Bound Adventure Center, Bridge Tennis Courts, Wallace Pool’s Rec Swim, Mahaney Dome’s Open Rec, and Public Skate / Stick & Puck at Alfond Arena. At these facilities you are also eligible for the same member benefits as other full members receive, such as locker rental privileges (lockers are still not free, however) and discounts on many programs. Family members who are not UMaine employees or UMaine students are eligible for free parking permits (max 2 per household). Voucher holders will receive 6 guest visits between now and the contract expiration date of June 30, 2015.
Family Members on UMaine Health Insurance: Employees may add their spouse/partner and any legal dependents aged 0-26 as long as they are included on the employee’s UMaine health insurance plan. Please bring your family’s health insurance cards with you if you would like your family added. (We don’t need to see your health insurance card… your own eligibility is not dependent on your health insurance status… but you DO need to be there.)
Family Members NOT on UMaine Health Insurance: Employees’ family members who are not on UMaine health insurance may join at the Employee rate even if they themselves are not Employees. Employee is required to be present at the time of membership purchase.
The information below only applies to employees of the Orono campus and UMaine System Office who choose to use the Orono facilities:
Paper Vouchers: Campus Recreation, HR, and the MaineCard office have worked together to automate the voucher process. We have imported all the voucher-eligible UMaine and UMaine System Employees into our membership database, and Voucher Passes are automatically assigned during that import process. You do not need a physical paper voucher.
Check-In: The Employee must have a MaineCard in order to receive a Voucher Pass. This is also the card you’ll use for check-in. If you do not have one, please visit the MaineCard office to get one. All family members who are not UMaine employees or UMaine students will check in with a RecCard, please request one during your first visit.
Parking: Family members who are not UMaine employees or UMaine students may get a free parking pass valid only in the Rec Center lot; maximum 2 per household.
Spouses/Partners Who Are Also Employees: If your spouse/partner is also an Employee, then once their vouchers are activated they will have their own record in our database (which we call a “household”) that has their own Voucher Pass on it. This may mean that one of you will have your kids listed under you and the other will not, or it may mean the kids are listed in both places with a “family member link” between them. Please just be aware of this situation in case you find you’re listed in your own household or your kids aren’t under you when you expect them to be.
Current Campus Rec Members: Voucher Pass holders who wish to cancel their membership in order to participate in the Voucher program may do so by filling out a Cancellation Request Form at the Rec Center front desk. This form cannot be emailed or faxed, it must be completed and turned in at the front desk so that the manager can ensure it’s filled out completely and correctly. Membership refunds will be prorated from the date the form is filled out. Employees switching to vouchers will not pay a membership cancellation fee. Questions regarding membership cancellations should be emailed to Sharon Kenney.
