Arrival Info

We think you are going to find your week at camp very educational and a lot of fun! The instructors for the computer modeling and the recreation counselors have a lot planned for your five days here at UM.

Arrival: Both Commuter and Resident campers should plan on arriving between 3 and 4 pm on the Sunday camp opens. It is very important for us to meet commuter campers on Sunday. This gives us a chance to review health forms, provide additional instructions, and provide daily arrival information and schedules, including drop-off and pick-up times and locations to all campers. Please do not arrive early since we will plan to register campers only between 3:00 and 4:00 pm.

Most resident campers will take Exit 193 off Interstate 95 to get to campus. Follow the signs toward Old Town and then turn right onto College Avenue at the light by McDonalds. Once on College Avenue and near the University please follow the signs posted. The drop off point is Hancock Hall and the signs will direct you to the correct location. Staff will be on hand to greet you.

Pickup and Closing Barbeque: We invite families to a barbecue at the Maine Bound Adventure Center from 3:00 – 5:00 on the Friday afternoon that your camp closes. Please be ready to leave campus by 5:00 Friday.

Parking: A parking pass for drop-off, pick-up, and closing barbecue accompanies this confirmation package.

If you are bringing a vehicle to leave for the week on campus, you will need to get a parking pass from Public Safety after you arrive. Drivers will have to leave their cars parked until they leave camp Friday.

What to Bring:

Cell Phones: Cell phones have become an increasing distraction to campers, and interfere with campers’ ability to attend to the activities, develop relationships with the other campers, and develop independence when away from home. Camp staff will enforce appropriate cell phone restrictions. Campers should be prepared to have cell phone access limited to evenings or to coordinate end-of-day pick-up.

Medication: If you have allergies or other medical conditions make sure you have your medication and let us know about it and where you keep it.

Emergency Contacts: If a parent has an emergency and needs to contact the camper, from 8:00 – 4:30 UM Campus Recreation at 581-1794 will field calls. The 24-hour campus dispatch number is 581-4040. We will make every effort to provide an emergency phone list at the beginning of camp.

Daily Schedule: Resident campers will start with breakfast at about 8:00. At 8:30 half the campers will proceed to the computer laboratory, and the other half will participate in the recreation activity for the day. At noon they’ll gather again for lunch. At 1:00 the groups will switch with half going to recreation and the other half going to the computer laboratory. At 4:30 campers will return to the dorm then proceed to dinner. Evenings will offer open computing time, tours of campus engineering facilities, movies, swimming at the campus pool, or other activities. Resident campers return to their rooms at a “reasonable hour” as determined by the counselors.

Computer Access: The computer lab has internet connections so if you have web based e-mail you can send and read messages prior to class or in the evening during open computing hours. Please leave your computer games at home. Staff will not allow the use of single or multi-user games with violent or offensive content (our call on what’s violent or offensive).

Reminder: Registered campers will be sent a confirmation package with the most up-to-date information. Please return the signed copies of the University of Maine recreation programs: Maine Bound release from liability and assumption of risk statement and University of Maine recreation programs: Maine Bound Adventure Center contract. Both the camper and the parent must sign the forms.

Registration Deadlines: Registrations are accepted through June 15, 2012. Cancellations received after June 8, 2012 cannot be refunded. Cancellations received before June 8, 2012                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            will receive full refunds minus a $50 processing fee. Exceptions for emergencies might be available.
