Undergraduate Programs - Minors

Three minors are available for UMaine students to complement their majors with other business disciplines.

Our Faculty Keep Students Engaged and Focused

At least 50% of the courses must be taken at UMaine.  Simply declare your minor at the Undergraduate Office (DPC 211) of the Maine Business School.  Students must have a UMaine 2.0 GPA to declare a minor and maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA minimum in the minor’s courses. The minor will be listed on the student’s transcripts upon graduation from his/her major. 

A minimum grade of C- is required in the following courses: BUA 201, BUA 202, BUA 270, BUA 325, and BUA 350.  Courses may be repeated to improve a grade.

Minor in Accounting (24 credits):

  • BUA 201 – Principles of Financial Accounting
  • BUA 202 – Principles of Managerial Accounting
  • BUA 301 – Intermediate Accounting I
  • BUA 302 – Intermediate Accounting II
  • BUA 305 – Cost Accounting
  • BUA 310  – Auditing
  • BUA 312 – Federal Taxation of Individuals
  • Accounting Elective

To become a certified public accountant in the State of Maine, 24 hours of accounting and 150 total hours of higher education are required.  Interested students may consider, after completing the accounting minor and fulfilling other prerequisites, applying to the Business School’s MBA program with the accounting concentration.  Please check that Web page for the additional prerequisites and application requirements.

Minor in Business Administration (24 credits):

  • BUA 201 – Principles of Financial Accounting
  • BUA 270 – Marketing
  • BUA 325 – Principles of Management and Organization
  • BUA 350 – Business Finance
  • ECO 120 – Principles of Microeconomics
  • ECO 121 – Principles of Macroeconomics
  • PSY 100 – General Psychology
  • BUA elective:  One additional business course for which prerequisites have been met. (BUA 202 is required for the MBA program)

(Students interested in pursuing an MBA at the University of Maine should check those requirements on the Graduate Admissions page.  The only business-related courses required by the MBS for the MBA are BUA 201, BUA 202, ECO 120 and ECO 121. Other prerequisites for the MBA program include marketing (BUA270), management (BUA 325), finance (BUA350)and statistics (MAT 215 or 232). These courses can be taken as undergraduate courses or as tutorials after graduation.

Minor in Management (24 credits):

  •  BUA 325 – Principles of Management and Organization Credits: 3
  •  BUA 326 – Organizational Behavior Credits: 3
  •  BUA 330 – Human Resource Management Credits: 3
  •  BUA 343 -  Introduction to International Business Credits: 3
  •  BUA 460 – Leadership Credits: 3
  •  ECO 120 – Principles of Microeconomics Credits: 3
  •  ECO 121 – Principles of Macroeconomics Credits: 3
  •  PSY 100 – General Psychology Credits: 3

A 2.0 cumulative GPA is required at the time the student declares a management minor. A management minor may be declared, at the earliest, in the second semester of a student’s enrollment.

A C- or better is required in BUA 325. A 2.0 cumulative GPA is required in the above courses to earn the minor. 50% of course must be earned at UMaine.

Students wishing to pursue the MBA

Students applying for admission to the MBA program in their fifth year should take:

  •  BUA 201 – Principles of Financial Accounting Credits: 3
  •  BUA 202 – Principles of Managerial Accounting Credits: 3
  •  ECO 120 – Principles of Microeconomics Credits: 3
  • ECO 121 – Principles of Macroeconomics Credits: 3

 

In addition, the student should take the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) during the senior year.
