Rich graduated from the University of Maine with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1979 and joined the Boeing Company in Seattle. While at Boeing for 26 years he held numerous engineering and executive positions. He is most proud of the airplane maintenance and safety work he accomplished as manager, Director, and finally Vice President of Maintenance Engineering where he won the Aviation Week Safety Award in 1999. He held in total three vice-presidential positions at Boeing, retiring in 2005 from the position of Vice-President, the Americas.
Higgins also completed an MBA at Seattle University and executive studies at the University of Washington and Carnegie-Mellon University. He was selected as the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society Distinguished Alumnus in 2011. He received his Master’s in History from Norwich University in 2009 and is now embarked on a large number of historical consulting projects and several writing projects. He is married to Jean, a UMaine graduate, and they have a daughter, Colleen. He currently supports UMaine through serving on the Board of Visitors, the Stillwater Society, and the College of Engineering Advisory Board.
