Agricultural Trade Show

There will be a Pesticides Applicator Recertification session on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at the Civic Center in Augusta, Maine.  The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the Maine Board of Pesticides Control will present three hours of training sessions. Licensed pesticide applicators and dealers may attend sessions to earn credits towards recertification. One credit will be allowed for each hour-session attended. The schedule is as follows:

9:00-10:00 a.m.

Spotted Winged Drosophila Update – David Handley, UMaine Extension

10:15 -11:15 a.m.

BPC Update – Gary Fish, Board of Pesticide Control

11:30-12:30 p.m.

Blueberry Pest Management Update – David Yarborough,  UMaine Extension

Also, from 12:35 to 1:05 p.m., Don Tilman, University of Delaware and Kevin Klair, University of Minnesota will present the Trade Adjustment Assistance Evaluation Results for Wild Blueberries (no pesticide credits).

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the Maine Board of Pesticides Control will also present a three-hour training session on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 to prepare growers for the Private Pesticide Applicator Core Exam.  After the Core exam training, both Core and Commodity exams will be administered.  Pre-registration required. Wild Blueberry Spring Meetings and Pesticide Training Session

The wild blueberry spring growers meetings will be held in Waldoboro on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 and Thursday, March 20, 2014 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM and in Machias on Saturday, March 22, 2014 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.  Details will be provided in the April Wild Blueberry newsletter.  

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the Maine Board of Pesticides Control will also present a three-hour core training session on Saturday, March 22, 2014 from 8:00 to 11:00 AM to prepare growers for the Private Pesticide Applicator Core Exam. Following the training session, there will be an additional hour to provide growers training for the 1B blueberry license certification.  After the exam training, both Core and Commodity exams will be administered at 1:00 PM.

Two Cups of Wild Blueberries Lowers the Risk of Metabolic Syndrome

A new study recently conducted by researchers at the University of Maine indicates two cups of wild blueberries a day may help in improving or preventing metabolic syndrome including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.  To read more about this study, see the article in the link below.
