Faculty - Nina Jerome Sutcliffe

Adjunct Associate Professor of Art

Drawing, Painting

Nina Jerome Sutcliffe has been teaching drawing and painting in the Art Department since 1987. A graduate of Mount Holyoke College and Rhode Island School of Design, she paints the Maine landscape and is inspired by light and color interacting with both the natural and constructed environments. Her work has been selected for thirteen public art projects through the Maine Arts Commission Percent for Art Program.

Artist’s statement:

“Making art encourages me to observe nature thoroughly. It requires that I ask questions, examine structures, make comparisons, seek contrasts, discover patterns, decipher rhythms, and organize these observations within a context that reflects my life and visual interests.

Rather than pictures of places, I prefer to consider my paintings a response to light and structure, experienced while moving through space. I enjoy the physical process of applying layers of paint, and observing the surprising color interactions that occur when small bits of base color emerge through top layers.”
