A native of Long Island, New York, Matthew Smolinsky graduated with a BS in communication from Boston University and an MFA in photography from Maine Media College. He worked as a staff photographer for newspapers in New York, Michigan, and Massachusetts from 1997 through 2001. In 2002 Matt moved to Seoul, Korea, to begin a long-term documentary project while teaching and working as a commercial photographer. Since 2006 he has been on the summer faculty at the Maine Media Workshops, where he also managed the Young Artists Program. Since 2008 he has led an expeditionary-based documentary program for 8th graders called Photo Treks, and has served as a mentor through the Farnsworth Art Museum, Trekkers, and Catholic Charities of Maine. In 2009 Matt co-founded a non-profit arts and educational organization called Obscura, where he continues to serve on the board of directors. His artwork has been published and exhibited around the world, and is currently represented by the Kim Young-Seob Gallery based in Seoul. Matt teaches digital imaging, photography, and digital art in the Art and New Media Departments at UMaine.
