MaJo Keleshian has taught drawing in the Department of Art since 2000, and believes that drawing is an essential foundation for all visual artists. She has exhibited widely in Maine and New England and her work has appeared in several Maine Biennials. Recently, she has taught workshops at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine.
In her abstract drawings, landscape-related imagery is transformed with color and mark. Layers of pigmented wax are applied, rubbed down, and reworked numerous times. All materials used are non-toxic. The textural quality of her drawings closely resembles that of an etching or, sometimes, a painted or photographic surface. Combining learned technical processes with spontaneous and expressive mark making, the drawings evoke moods and moments of the changing and dynamic natural environment.
