ARI Directors - Deborah Bouchard
Deborah A. Bouchard was born in Lewiston, Maine and grew up in the Brunswick/Topsham area; a true Mainer through and through. She attended the University of Maine, graduating with a BS in Microbiology in 1983. From 1983 through 1990, she worked at the University of Maine as a professional microbiologist in the role of Research Associate and also as the Coordinator of Microbiology Laboratory Instruction.
In the summer of 1990, Deborah left the University to enter the private sector. She served for a short stint in human clinical microbiology and then moved on to Northeast Laboratory Services (NEL), where she served as manager for 3 divisions, the Aquatic Animal Diagnostics, the Food Microbiology and the Whole Effluent Toxicity Testing divisions. With this gained fast-paced industry experience, she left NEL in 1996, and co-founded Micro Technologies Inc., a leading aquatic animal health inspection, testing and biotechnology company. She served as company CEO for nine years. In 2004, she sold her half of Micro Technologies Inc. and after a year of consulting with Maine’s Department of Marine Research, she returned ‘home’ to the University of Maine. Currently Deborah has a split position. She serves as the manager for University of Maine’s Animal Health Laboratory (University of Maine Cooperative Extension) and Assistant Director of Aquaculture Research for the Aquaculture Research Institute.
As a well rounded, Microbiologist, Deborah has extensive experience in laboratory management, animal and aquatic animal health diagnostics, inspection, and research. She has broad experience in areas of cell culture, virology, and bacteriology. With over 20 years of experience in aquatic animal health, she has a solid knowledge of domestic and international aquatic animal health regulatory laws and procedures. Her professional interests are centered on applied research in the aquatic animal health realm and development of new aquatic animal health products and diagnostic assays.
Deborah lives in Bradley, Maine with her partner Donna Loring, two amazing doodles, Peasley and Cobee and a reclusive cat, Trixster.
