Hockey For Haiti- Results

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Youth members of 4-H clubs in Androscoggin, Sagadahoc and Cumberland counties raised more than $250 to benefit American Red Cross work in Haiti with their Hockey For Haiti event at the Lewiston MAINEiacs home game February 10.

Several local businesses including the MAINEiacs, Tractor Supply and Fast Breaks donated items to a raffle the 4-Hers ran during the game. The youth also managed the Chuck-A-Puck competition and sold discounted tickets in advance of the game to raise money.

“We would love to have raised thousands of dollars,” Matthew Fornoff, AmeriCorps VISTA with UMaine Extension and organizer of the program, said. “But Red Cross makes every single dollar benefit people who really need it. These 4-Hers know their hard work and our donation will make a big difference.”

4-H, a national youth development organization, has grown into a community of more than six million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. It includes more than half a million volunteers and 60 million alumni. The American Red Cross has spent or committed nearly $78 million to meet the most urgent needs of earthquake survivors. American Red Cross has focused on food, clean drinking water, shelter and relief items as well as helping Haitians meet health needs, providing family linking services and Creole-speaking interpreters.

4-H Haiti relief project update

Monday, January 25th, 2010

4-Hers and families,

Thanks to those of you who have responded with interest in helping us raise funds to donate to the Red Cross for Haiti earthquake relief. We appreciate your desire to give of your time for this meaningful cause.

As I mentioned in the last message, we are working to partner with local sports teams. We are still waiting to finalize plans with the Pirates and Red Claws and will be in touch with you when we set those details.

However, we DO have a date with the Lewiston Maineiacs. The team has agreed to help us at their home game Wednesday, February 10 at 7 p.m. So, here’s what we are doing to raise money:

1. Raffle – We need 4-Hers to solicit a few good items from local businesses (or local families) that we can raffle. Ideally, we would have 4-6 items to raffle with a minimum value of $25 per item (but, as we are trying to raise money, the bigger the item a business can donate, the more money we would make, potentially). If you have ideas or connections, wonderful. If you need help with who to go to or how to approach them, feel free to contact us.

2. Selling tickets – The Maineiacs are selling us discounted tickets ($9) that we will sell to the public for $13, which is actually $1 below the normal price. We have agreed to start at 100 tickets, and can get more if we want to keep selling them. Right now, the tickets are at the UMaine Extension office in Lisbon Falls. For logistical purposes (collecting money), we think it would be easiest to use this as our home base for sales, but please be talking and taking orders from your friends, families, school teachers, employers, the pizza delivery guy and anyone else you come across.

3. Chuck-A-Puck – The Maineiacs also will let us run the Chuck-A-Puck contest at the game February 10. We will receive 50% of profits.

So, we need 4-Hers and families to get involved at any or all stages! This will be a great fundraiser to help the Red Cross and people of Haiti!
