Fundraiser for Haiti

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Dear 4-H Members and Leaders,

After an emotional discussion last week at our office, the UMaine Extension staff decided it is only fitting that our local 4-H get involved with Haiti relief efforts. While this is not a local issue, it is one that has affected many of us her in Maine. As an organization designed to teach our youth the value of service to others and to develop them into effective leaders, we hope you will all support this effort.

Our plan right now is to partner with the Lewiston Maineiacs, Portland Pirates and Maine Red Claws to hold a raffle at a home game. We would then donate the money to American Red Cross. We’d like to do this in the next 2-3 weeks if possible, and would like to have 4-Hers involved as much as possible (soliciting raffle prizes from local business, staffing raffle table at the game). Also, the Maineiacs suggested the possibility of participating with the Chuck-A-Puck and selling tickets, where 4-H would buy several at a discounted price, then sell for the normal price and the difference would be donated.

Please send an email or call if you are interested in helping out with this program. This is a great opportunity for our 4-Hers to get involved in a project that will make a REAL difference in the lives of REAL people. We welcome any thoughts or suggestions.

Thank you,
Matt

Martin Luther King Day of Service- January 18, 2010

Monday, January 11th, 2010

To: Androscoggin and Sagadahoc County 4-Hers and families

From: Matt and Al, AmeriCorps VISTA

RE: MLK Day 2010 activity for 4-Hers

In an effort to provide a service opportunity for our local 4-Hers and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. we are in the process of organizing a program for 4-H members. We have come up with an event that, we believe, will be beneficial to the youth development and community development ideals of 4-H and enjoyable for those whom we are serving.

We have scheduled two events, one for each county:

Androscoggin: 4-Hers are invited to Clover Manor in Auburn in the early afternoon. We will have about one hour to socialize with assisted living residents. Other groups are coming to County Manor this day also, and the staff member we contacted suggested 4-Hers offer some kind of educational presentation about the life of MLK. In discussing this possibility, we are wondering if we can perhaps provide a forum where this role can be reversed so the 4-Hers can hear stories about MLK and civil rights the residents and everyone can learn and share their views on the issues.

Sagadahoc: The Highlands in Topsham has agreed to welcome to local 4-H members for one to one-and-a-half hour in the morning prior to lunch. 4-Hers will have the opportunity to interact and socialize primarily with assisted living residents. We have not planned for a formal program or presentation, simply a time to talk, share and play games with the residents who are often thrilled to be visited by the communities’ youth.

At each location 8-10 4-Hers would be ideal and would provide a good show of support for the community, the clubs and the program. We also would like 2-3 adult chaperones for each program (at least one other besides Al and Matt).

Help us spread the word to our 4-H members. We want to make this an annual service event and hope our 4-Hers take advantage of this educational opportunity and support the community and the ideals of MLK through this volunteering.

Please RSVP to the UMaine Extension office 207-353-5550 or by email to Matt or Al.

THANKS!
