Agriculture & Water Quality - Genetically Engineered Crops
Over the past decade, very little about food production has “stirred the pot” more than genetically engineered crops. What we know is that herbicide tolerant corn, soybeans, and canola are now widely grown in Maine and the rest of New England. These crops have been engineered to resist herbicides that would otherwise kill the plant. Recently, the Maine Board of Pesticides Control approved the use of insect resistant field and sweet corn varieties which are engineered to produce Bt proteins. On this website, we will discuss the positive and negative aspects of these different “traited” crops.
